Design Of The Month
Field Design in Hungary Using Different Types of Subzones
A client in Hungary is having ponding issues with his field. His neighbor to the west is a bit difficult and is not ready to solve the water issues together so design is to drain elsewhere.

Existing Topography

Existing Drainage Analysis

The Ponding Map calculated about 10% of the field is ponded and mostly in the west area.

Proposed Topography

An OptiSurface 4Way design was generated for the field.  Ridges were added to the west and south edges preventing water from exiting there. A valley subzone was used to direct water to exit to the north instead.

The brown subzone had the smoothing reduced as there were unnecessary cuts due to higher smoothing.

Finally, the field was extended by about 15m to the east where there was a small area with trees which they wish to cut down and include in the design. We used breaklines drawn at the east edge then the breakline was moved to the desired location to extend the surface in the Existing Topography.

Proposed Cut/Fill Map

Earthworks ended up at 205 m3/ha or 1760 m3 for the 8.6 hectare field.

Feature Of The Month
Overview:  The Extend Surface feature is used to create a new surface to extend the edges of the field.  This can be used when a surface beyond the edge of the survey is needed for the design.

Example:

The design of the month shown above shows a design which needed to be extended to cover the tree area in the east.

The initial method was using breaklines to create and extend the surface but there's an easier way to do this.

Right click Existing Topography under Project Properties > Extend Surface

If you can't see any images here, click 'Display images..' in your email software.
The image below show the surface extended with the same elevation at the edge by 20m.

If you can't see any images here, click 'Display images..' in your email software.
All that is needed now is to adjust the east boundary to cover the extended surface so it is included in the calculations.
